Alumni Update – Kira Van Walraven ’08

I graduated from Rockway in 2008. Right after graduation I attended the University of Guelph where I earned a BSc in Biological Sciences. I got a job directly out of university working at a small municipal insurance company as a Business Analyst. After working there for a few years, I knew I wanted more, so I got a job at Sun Life. During my time at Sun Life I had many life changes, most of them positive. I achieved my lifelong dream of competing at the Royal Winter Fair, got married, had two kids and helped my husband open two successful pharmacies.

During the last year, however, my father died. At the time, I was on maternity leave and the thought of going back to work and being tied to a corporate lifestyle was filling me with unease. I knew again it was time for a change. I was contacted by the owner and founder of Make It Sow, a non-profit fundraising company and asked if I would consider taking on the role of General Manager. I started with the company in September of this year (2024) and haven’t looked back since.

Rockway gave me the confidence to be where I am today. It was such a huge part of me growing up. The atmosphere there is one of community and acceptance. Rockway allows you to find your place in the world and gives you the steppingstones you need to go out and make something of yourself. I’m truly grateful for my time spent there and can’t wait for my girls to join the next generation of Rockway alumni.
