The Dennis Wikerd French Language Scholarship Award: A fitting tribute
Wednesday, January 31, 2018 marks Dennis Wikerd’s last day as Rockway Mennonite Collegiate’s longest serving French language teacher and Assistant Principal.
Since 1978, Dennis has championed cultural exchanges and French language studies, in addition to carrying out significant leadership administrative responsibilities. Throughout, he has always kept the interests and well-being of students front and centre in his work.
“Dennis knows Rockway intimately and has lived out its mission in his faith and works. He has dedicated his career to Rockway, and it is clear that he loves it dearly. This has been demonstrated through his commitment to excellence in the classroom, his vision and passion for cross-cultural experiences and his love for students.”
Recently, at a special Retirement Open House, we heard several touching tributes from past and present colleagues, students and families, all illustrating the impact of Dennis’ contributions to Rockway, and reminding us of how many lives he has touched (visit @RockwayMennonite on FaceBook to see photographs from the afternoon). It was also a time to express our gratitude to Dennis for his legacy of service to Rockway Mennonite Collegiate and its students.
At the gathering, we announced the opportunity to contribute to The Dennis Wikerd French Language Scholarship Award in of honour of Dennis’ work and achievements in education.
For the duration of available funds, each year, an award of $300 will be given to a Grade 12 graduating student who has excelled in French language acquisition.
Anyone can contribute to the Award to help it continue year after year.
You can donate in honour of Dennis by giving online (select the DWFL Award under the Fund tab), by calling 519-743-5209 x 3013 or mailing/dropping off your cheque (made out to Rockway Mennonite Collegiate with ‘Dennis Wikerd Award’ in the memo line) to Rockway Mennonite Collegiate, Attn: Business Office, 110 Doon Road, Kitchener, ON N2G 3C8 (all donations are eligible for a charitable tax receipt).
Dennis will return this June to present the inaugural Award at the 2018 Graduation.
We look forward to sharing this special time with Dennis and to sharing his legacy with future students for years to come.
