Welcome to Café Rockway!
CAFÉ ROCKWAY is open with full cafeteria style service (i.e. trays, plates, cutlery, more food options, etc.).
Students are asked to stand in line with cash, or meal ticket (see below), and flow through the servery in single file. The Hot Plate meal will remain as a rotating menu item with many other drinks, foods and snacks (e.g. sandwiches, baked goods, freezer treats) which can also be purchased.
What is a “Hot Plate” meal?
The term “Hot Plate” is the menu item listed on the rotation. It includes an entree or a main dish plus a side item. Each day, our Food Services staff create and serve delicious home cooked meals for students, staff and faculty to enjoy. Check out the chart below for this years’ four-week rotation schedule. This rotation is subject to change, and any changes will be noted in the Daily Announcements.
What if a student has dietary needs?
Any student with a dietary requirement who wishes to purchase the hot plate that day should email Cyndi at cafe@rockway.ca no later than 10:00 am so their dietary needs may be accommodated appropriately.
Hot Plate Rotation 2024-2025
- NEW: Meal Tickets include a Hot Plate (entrée or main with a side) and a fruit or veggie cup
- Bolded mains can be purchased separately for $7
- Students who use a Meal Ticket on $5 Fridays will be given a cookie
Students may purchase any food or drink from Café Rockway with cash OR if they will be regularly purchasing the Hot Plate meal, you may want to consider buying MEAL TICKETS.
What are Meal Tickets?
Meal tickets are a convenient way that families can purchase food in advance from Café Rockway. They are sold in bundles of ten and are priced to give a small discount (see below).
Pricing – updated with the Friendlier $0.50 deposit
As inflation continues to affect the cost of food Café Rockway feels it is important to ensure students have a hot meal option that is of value. Our pricing has been altered, but we have sought to add some extra value. Thank you for your understanding.
If paying in cash, the Hot Plate is $9.50 this year. Check out our Price List – updated Oct 31 for full menu and pricing information. NEW: if students wish to take their Hot Plate meal “To Go” there will be a charge of $1 with a $0.50 reimbursement through our new Friendlier packaging.
Meal Ticket Bundles
Meal tickets help to move the lunch line along while helping to save a little money. Families may wish to buy Meal Tickets in bulk (bundles of 10 tickets).
There are two options:
10 x PINK Ticket – Hot Plate only ($9 x 10) = $90
10 x GREEN Ticket – Hot Plate & Drink ($10 x 10) = $100
How do I pay?
Meal Tickets can only be purchased from the Main Office. Please choose your preferred method of payment from the following convenient options:
- Cash
- Cheque (made payable to Rockway Mennonite Collegiate)
- E-Transfer – e-transfer your payment to mealtickets@rockway.ca including the message meal tickets for [student name]. In addition please send an email to mealtickets@rockway.ca with the details of your order i.e. 10 x hot plate only meal tickets. Please note any requests must be emailed by 3 pm the day before the student collects the Lunch Tickets. If you miss this deadline, students can continue to purchase a Hot Plate directly from the Café servery.
- Student Account – Email authorization to charge student account to mealtickets@rockway.ca. Email must come from a parent email address and include student name and amount to be charged to the account. The student account must be in good standing and set up for payment by pre-authorized debit. Suggested email text: ‘Please charge $[amount] to [Student Name] account for [insert number] Hot Plate only or Hot Plate and Drink lunch tickets’
Please note any requests must be emailed by 3 pm the day before the student collects the Lunch Tickets. If you miss this deadline students can continue to purchase a Hot Plate directly from the Café servery.
IF YOU BRING YOUR OWN LUNCH
Microwaves are available for student use. Please be sure to bring everything you need to heat your lunch (microwaveable container, utensils etc). Water bottle filling stations and drinking fountains will be available for student use as well.

Friendlier Packaging is coming to Rockway!
Café Rockway is set to introduce a new packaging system for “To Go” items currently wrapped in cellophane (e.g. sandwiches, wraps, etc.) this year to further reduce single-use plastics in the Café. Rockway’s THINK project has encouraged Café Rockway to look at alternatives to single-use plastic, and the Friendlier company is a local company with compatible goals.
Each item sold in a Friendlier container will:
- Include a $0.50 deposit when purchasing the item.
- Belong to the student until they are scanned and returned to the appropriate Friendlier bin.
If you would like to be reimbursed for the $0.50 deposit:
- With a phone:
- Set up your Friendlier account on your students phone using this link: app.friendlier.ca
- After eating, students then scan the QR code on the bottom of the Friendlier container in the Friendlier app and put the empty container in the Friendlier bins in the Assembly Area (where they eat lunch)
- Without a phone:
- Set up your Friendlier account using this link: app.friendlier.ca
- Login in and record the serial number from the bottom of the container
- A request can then be made from the app/website for an e-transfer deposit to be made to you, directly from Friendlier.
FAQs
Does Rockway provide the deposit refund?
No, Rockway does not provide the deposit refund. The refund comes directly from Friendlier. Rockway pays all of the deposits when receiving the Friendlier containers for use and passes this deposit amount along in the price of the “To Go” item. The deposit is then reimbursed to the student/family by Friendlier once the item is returned. This can take 1-2 weeks from the time when the container is returned.
Does the container need to be cleaned before returning?
No, the container does not need to be cleaned first. However, food in the container should be placed in the compost.
Do I need to create an account to purchase an item in a Friendlier container?
An account is not required for purchase or return of the containers. However, an account is required to receive deposit reimbursements. An account can be created through the Friendler website or on the Friendlier app.
What if I don’t have a phone?
You can claim your deposit return through the friendlier website at friendlier.ca or email info@friendlier.ca
How does this affect my Meal Tickets?
Currently, these containers will not be used for the Hot Plate which means the $0.50 deposit will not affect the price of Meal Tickets this year.
