A delicious week in ESL
Learning English at Rockway can be a delicious undertaking – especially if you get to experience Kristen Mathies‘ food unit in Rockway’s English as a Second Language program.
Mathies has devised a way to make language learning both fun and meaningful for her students, by providing hands on experience with a social justice twist. The unit culminates in a fantastic field trip that melds community service, local food, and cultural education.
Here’s a decription of the trip written by the students’ themselves:
“Our field trip on Wednesday took us to four places: at Ontario Christian Gleaners we volunteered cleaning pails to send food aid; at Little Louie’s diner we had fantastic burgers; at Golden Hearth Bakery we met Rockway grad Tavis Martin, who owns the bakery and gave us a behind-the-scenes tour; and at New City Grocery we bought ingredients to cook fried rice and barbecued pork the next day. It was a delicious week in ESL E!”
