IMG_5578On a cold, wintery first day of Spring, the Rockway student body was greeted by a message from Summer. Alumna Kristen Berg (2000), the new director of Fraser Lake Camp, presented a chapel telling the story of what camp has meant to her, what Fraser Lake has to offer, and how those who partake in Summer camp, either as campers or as staff, can “expect the unexpected”.

Berg shared stories from her childhood, youth, and adult years that showcased how involvement with summer camps can offer young people the chance to live in community. She relayed how camp also provides opportunity to develop new skills, to make lasting friendships, and most importantly, to make a positive and often surprising impact on the lives of children and their peers.

She finished her talk with a video showcasing the story of a counsellor who was amazed when a 10 year old camper from Toronto informed him that didn’t want to be a gang member anymore, but had decided to be a fisherman. The Rockway student body was left with the challenge to consider becoming involved in any summer camp and if they do, to “expect the unexpected”.

Fraser Lake Camp is a Mennonite summer camp located east of Bancroft, Ontario, not far from Algonquin Park. Kristen was recently featured in an article in The Canadian Mennonite, which can be seen on the Fraser Lake Camp facebook page. The camp blog can be read at http://thefraserexperience.com.
