Another Great Outdoor Adventure

Posted on: October 7th, 2014

Rockway’s Outdoors Club returned from a canoe trip in Killarney Provincial Park after four days that were exhausting and exciting, delightful and damp, challenging and chilly. Above all else, our trip was an adventure that renewed our sense of wonder with nature and gave us a chance to create new friendships and work as a team.

We set out on Thursday, Sept 22nd, after school from Rockway. By Friday morning, we were paddling through Killarney’s amazing quartzite ridges, swimming in its fairly frigid waters, and enjoying its beautiful fall colours.

Saturday was spent on a 10 km hike up and down Silver Peak, an ancient eroded mountain that looms over the corner of the park we were travelling. The rain held off during our hike and, while we enjoyed some sunshine and breathtaking vistas on the way up, we finished our climb in the middle of a cloud as strong winds set our hair and clothing flapping.

Our trip finished on a rainy loop of lakes as we huddled under rain flies and in tents, enjoying gorp, playing dutch blitz, and strengthening friendships already hardened by the adversity of fall tripping. We returned to Rockway tired but renewed and thankful for another chance to get out into the outdoors.
