A great season of Badminton!
The Rockway badminton season finished last week and our teams had a strong showing again this year. Early enthusiasm on both the junior and senior teams, combined with the fact that our juniors were defending league champions, gave us high expectations for the season ahead.
The first competition we attended was the annual Resurrection invitational tournament where all of our players finished in the top half of the standings. The success of that weekend provided momentum going into this year’s District 8 tournament.
Although we had to surrender the crown, the juniors were led by excellent finishes from Kean Snider and James Carr-Pries in the boys doubles category and Sophia Amstutz in girls singles.
At the senior championships the next day our team climbed even higher! We finished 2nd overall and missed writing our name on the plaque by the smallest margin. Top results came from Eric Grierson in boys singles, Kristine Wu in girls singles and Zack Kehl and Laura Moolenbeek in mixed doubles. These four players qualified for CWOSSA, a regional competition that brings together the best players from across central western Ontario, where the field is always fierce.
Rockway spirit was on display as our team pushed a number of their matches to the the exciting final points! Thanks go out to parents for their support this year and congratulations to the players whose hard work resulted in many memorable performances. The future of badminton at Rockway is bright!
