My Buddy Brett

principal ponderings2One of the most rewarding parts of being a teacher, is reconnecting with students.  I had such a reunion this past November during Rockway’s Homecoming Week-End.  As I stood in the foyer greeting people prior to the Spaghetti Supper, I was delighted to see Brett Barnett, a student I taught in 1992, my first year of teaching.  We had a great chat that evening and I later invited him back to share a conversation.

Brett discovered he had Tourette Syndrome in the late 80’s, and experienced some significant challenges in elementary school.  Both he and his parents were looking for a place that would be sensitive to both his academic and social challenges.  Brett knew high school would be a big challenge for him, but he was ready for a fresh start at a new school.  He recalls having a conversation with Bert Lobe, Rockway’s Principal at the time, during his Admissions interview saying, “Brett, I will help you to graduate, but you will have to do it yourself!”

And that he did. Brett was a delight to teach.  He was kind, he was enthusiastic, he was a hard worker and he soon discovered he loved music! He sang in the Grade 10 Choir and joined a student initiated band that played at Rockway coffeehouses. He recalls several teachers who were supportive and worked alongside him to complete his assignments and write his tests. In June of 1994, Brett walked across the Rockway stage, received his Grade 12 Diploma and exited the stage with a huge smile on his face!

Brett is presently employed at Zehrs, where his infectious personality and dependability is appreciated.  He loves the Toronto Maple Leafs and continues to nurture his love for music by playing in a blues band.

Thanks, Brett, for coming back to Rockway!
