Cake for a cause!

The founder of Wadeng (which means “to look with hope towards a brighter future”) is Jacob Deng, a former “Lost Boy of Sudan”. He had to flee his home during a militia attack, and with thousands of other children, he walked for months to get to a refugee camp. Many of the children died from starvation or illness, or during attacks by wild animals. Jacob survived and traded his few possessions for goats which he sold to pay his way at a boarding school.

Jacob told his story in chapel, and also was a guest speaker for a number of Rockway classes.

We are hoping to raise $3000 for solar panels on their school. We have been selling hot chocolate every Friday throughout November and December which raised about $100. On Friday, November 22nd we hosted a cake auction. There were many fantastic and yummy cakes that students and teachers brought in to auction. These included an Angry Bird cake, several cake pops, a tennis court cake, a cupcake-cake and many others.

The teachers and students had many bidding wars over the prized cakes, and some went for as high as $120. We all had lots of fun watching and participating in the auction, and of course we all enjoyed our cakes. All of the cakes sold, raised another $857.50. This combined with the money from the Hot Chocolate Fridays puts our efforts close to $1000, or a third of the way to our goal of $3000. After Christmas, we have more fundraisers planned to help us reach our goal by the end of this school year.
