Our Silent Auction is almost here!

Posted on: October 22nd, 2018

As I toured our community this past week, picking up donations for Rockway’s annual Community Silent Auction (Friday, October 26, 5-7:30 pm), I was reminded of what a generous community we have.

As an independent school, Rockway relies on fundraising to fill the funding gap in daily operations and facilities. Fundraising also helps keep Rockway affordable for families.

At all community stops, I was warmly welcomed; all were enthusiastic to give and it was apparent that all supported numerous other community fundraising initiatives.

Friday, I had the pleasure of thanking in-person some of the local businesses that have supported Rockway’s fundraising efforts over the years – Swanson’s Home Hardware, Newtex and Bingemans to name a few. Coincidentally, each has a long history of business success. Or, is this a coincidence?

On Saturday morning, the New Hamburg Thrift Centre was buzzing with activity as people purchased recycled items to lessen their footprint on our planet and to support the work of Mennonite Central Committee. I realized that the Centre’s donation to the auction would give many times over!

Next, I was off to Jake & Humphreys Bistro, also in New Hamburg. Inside the older converted home, the walls are full of art and the menu is intentionally affordable. Everything about this restaurant tells you it is part of the community.

After a couple more stops, I finished the day at Towne Bowl in Kitchener. Upstairs was a group of bowlers with the Special Athletes league, run in conjunction with KW Habilitation. What an inspirational way to finish my day!

What started out as a time to pick up auction donations, turned into a time to connect with some of the people behind local small businesses. Thank you to each and every one of them.

I hope you will follow their generosity and support our Community Silent Auction this Friday. We have a great list of gift ideas and useful items to bid on. Bring your family and friends for the Spaghetti Supper, check out the Auction, and cheer at the Alumni Sports Challenge.

If you’re not able to join us, please remember the generosity of our auction contributors when you are shopping in our community.
