Perfect Weather for Dog Sledding

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERASo far, this winter has been a cold one. Record low temperatures have kept many people close to home, snuggled up indoors. Not so the Rockway Outdoors Club!

Last weekend, over the course of 40 hours, twelve Rockway students built and slept in snow shelters, encountered captive non-socialized wolves and moose, broke new trails cross-country skiing, played with 75 Siberian huskies, and traveled over 15 kms by dogsled.

Our annual visit to the Haliburton Forest and Wildlife Reserve was a great success. We packed up and left Rockway on Friday after classes and spent a full day on Saturday enjoying the two to three foot deep snow and -10 degree temperatures, all while experiencing some of the most exciting outdoor winter activities Canada has to offer.

We traveled through the forest in pairs, pulled by teams of six eager and excited huskies. We piled and carved out three quinzees, with seven students braving the elements to sleep outdoors.

Reluctantly, we drove home on Sunday afternoon, exhausted but energized by this very different experience of our Ontario winter weather.
