Flowering the Cross

IMG_6249On Thursday, April 2,  the Rockway community gathered for its annual Easter chapel. We arrived in chapel to find a simple wooden cross covered in chicken wire. Readings and music led us through the stories of Jesus’ Last Supper, betrayal and death.

IMG_6324There was space for quiet reflection on our own difficult experiences. And then, as the story turned to the celebration of Jesus’ resurrection, everyone who wanted to participate was invited forward to “flower the cross” as a way of claiming the hope of the resurrection.Buckets of flowers were provided, and as we sang, Longing for Light, people chose flowers and moved forward to place them in the chicken wire covering the cross.

A beautiful transformation took place as the stark, bare wood of the cross sprouted more and more colourful flowers. We ended the chapel with a rousing rendition of the hymn, Low in the grave he lay, a fine Easter tradition at Rockway!
