A Food Drive with a Twist: Rivalry!

Posted on: November 21st, 2014

PrintRockway Mennonite Collegiate’s Annual Food Drive has seen students collect thousands and thousands of items of food every year for the House of Friendship’s Christmas Food Hamper Program. In past years, the encouragement to collect cans came along with the promise of some unique incentives such as the Vice Principal shaving off a beard that was older than most of the students.

This year’s Student Council has decided to take the idea of incentive to a whole other level. They have collaborated with their arch-sports-rival, Woodland Christian High School, to challenge each other’s school to see who can collect the most number of food items per student during this season of giving. Rockway will continue to give to House of Friendship and Woodland will donate their collected food items to Ray of Hope.

An inspiring message at the recent Rockway Food Drive Kick off Assembly was clearly set out by Student Council to follow up the video challenge by Woodland. Student Council Co-President, Lukas Winter, challenged Rockway students to see how the long-standing rivalry with Woodland’s sports teams could bring out the best in all of them.

A friendly competition between schools + a long-standing, deeply-held rivalry = tons and tons of much needed food for those who find themselves hungry this Christmas season.

This is truly a competition where we all win!
