Fun in French with First Graders

IMG_0368Grade ten French students at Rockway took a field trip in the fall to a grade one French immersion class at Sheppard Public School on Weber Street.  The purpose of this trip was to share the alliterative alphabet books that they had written for the grade one students there.

This project started early in the term with Rockway students writing letters of introduction to the grade one students and asking them to answer a few basic questions about their likes and dislikes. The grade ten students then incorporated those answers in the content of their books.

Our trip to Sheppard in November was the first time we had met our grade one partners and we began with introductions and then proceeded to the school library where the grade ten students read their books to the Sheppard students.  When this was done, we worked collaboratively on making Christmas crafts.

IMG_0361Although some of our grade ten students were initially a bit nervous about using their French with other students, it is safe to say that their fears were quickly allayed as groups of big and small students sat together, read, made crafts and became fast friends.
