Learning about Local Sustainability

IMG_1057On Tuesday, May 12th, our grade 7 Geography class had an opportunity to engage our thinking around meaningful ways to mitigate climate change.

The new LRT system that is currently under construction came up as a discussion point. In order to learn more about the environmental advantages of this kind of a system, we invited Jim Wideman, former Regional Councillor for the city of Kitchener and chair of the region’s Planning and Works committee, to be our guest speaker.

IMG_1072He answered a myriad of questions from the students such as: how much will it reduce traffic; what happens in a power shortage; why is it called “light rail transit”; and how many people will it be able to transport? Mr. Wideman called the LRT “the ultimate recycling” because our region is able to generate enough electricity to run the LRT.

It was an enlightening hour for our grade 7s as they endeavored to understand how a community can work toward environmental sustainability.
