Mastering Math at Rockway

Math TutorsOn Thursday October 10th, we held our first “Mastering Math” tutoring session with tutors from Tutoring Beyond Borders. The tutoring took place in the library, during period five and after school. All together twenty students were in attendance which was a great response for our first session.

Many of the students reported that they found it very helpful and planned to return next week. It was wonderful to see students helping each other along with their tutor to achieve greater levels of understanding. As an added bonus, many of our international students took advantage of tutoring in their native language.

We are extremely grateful for this opportunity to work together with Tutoring Beyond Borders (TBB), an organization that was founded by Rockway alumnus Brenda Lee (2009). Lee’s vision was to create a team who provides free academic support for students from grades 7 – 12. She currently serves as the president, and last year, TBB was recognized as a Top Employer of 2013 by the University of Waterloo.

You can read more about Lee’s vision and how TBB was started (in Brenda’s own words!) in this article on their website.
