Only at Rockway!

principal ponderings2It is not uncommon for me on any given day to hear the expression, “Only at Rockway!” When this happens, a big smile appears on my face because I know what it means!

“Only at Rockway” moments can happen at any time, in any place of the school! They are the moments that faculty, staff or students identify a situation that is unique to our school culture. Here are several examples:

20160405_092756Rockway faculty, staff and students gather two times a week for chapel. Most students choose to come to the Assembly Area directly following their last class instead of going to their lockers which means students come to chapel with their backpacks. And while you may think they all wear their backpacks into the chapel space, they don’t. They drop them outside of the Assembly Area, usually surrounding me! It is quite the sight, and while in many ways it is cluttered and a walking hazard, I see the backpacks emulating a community of trust. “Only at Rockway!”

Rockway had the opportunity to host Girls’ A OFSSA Volleyball March 6-9. In addition to a high functioning organizing committee comprised of Ray Boehm, Bernie Burnett, Lindsay Shantz and recent alumnus Courtney Brubacher, I was extremely moved by the many people who volunteered and share their time and talents for this mammoth event. Students swept the courts, kept score, did tech, cheered on the Senior Girls; parents served at the banquet, sat at the registration table, cheered, made donations; alumni re-engaged with us, and Lindsay and Joann, coaches of the Senior Girl’s team, decorated the bus – it was amazing! ”Only at Rockway!

Throughout the year, many teachers comment about how students break into song while on a class trip, usually on the bus. Students often sing songs from their respective choir or sometimes they sing a hymn. It is amazing to hear teenagers singing the doxology in four part harmony! “Only at Rockway!

Ask your Rockway student about an “Only at Rockway” moment. It will make for an interesting dinner conversation!
