Outdoors Club canoes at Algonquin Park

Posted on: October 7th, 2013

Outdoor ClubOn Thursday, September 19th, the Outdoors Club paddled up Canoe Lake in Algonquin Park with a pleasant tail-wind in 24 degree sunshine. On Sunday the 22nd, we paddled back, again in sunshine with the wind at our backs.

In between those two days we made twelve portages, endured twenty-four hours of rain, saw three foraging moose at the side of a lake and witnessed a beautiful change of season as the fall colours came out. This was the Rockway Outdoors Club’s first extended canoe trip in partnership with the Silver Lake Mennonite Camp Outdoor Education program.

Thirteen grade 10 and 11 students participated along with Bryan Berg and Lindsay Shantz. We were ably led by former Rockway students Leah Martin and Barrett Bender, now employed at Silver Lake. The trip was a great success as all involved learned tripping skills, practiced leadership and teamwork,  pushed their physical boundaries, and reflected on why it is that we seek out wilderness.
