Paying It Forward One Golf Swing At A Time
Hello!
This is David Seyler, Owner of Riverside Brass & Aluminum Foundry in New Hamburg and Rockway supporter (second from right in the photo). I have a long association with Rockway Mennonite Collegiate —in fact, my wife, Susan is a Rockway Alumna and our three children, James, John and Rachel are also Alumni. They all continue to spend time with friends they made while at Rockway.
Because Rockway has been such a big part of our family, I volunteered on the Board of Directors for about nine years. I served as Chair of Personnel and helped lead some fundraising to retire the debt in 1999. I continue to stay involved, in meetings on strategy and long term planning, and of course, golfing at the annual tournament!
I’ve been golfing in the tournament for twenty years! It’s a wonderful day of fun with friends and new golfers that you get to know, and I just like to golf for a good cause!
My favourite memory is the year my daughter, Rachel, and three Rockway graduates from her class, golfed. And they won!! I was so proud of Rachel and her friends. It really is wonderful to see the next generation getting involved and paying it forward for future Rockway students. I like that the proceeds from the tournament benefit Rockway’s tuition assistance.
I also like to challenge others to get their foursome team signed up before our team. This year, our team signed up within a week of Rockway sending out the notice! Team member, Bob Shantz (first on the left) has golfed all 22 years of the tournament’s existence! Jim Blair (first on the right) has been with us a number of years, and we have also golfed with Steve Farlow, David Jutzi, John Klassen and Dale Brubacher-Cressman.
Along the way, we’ve been tournament champions three times. We’re back again to defend the title we won—probably about 6 years ago! (ha ha)—but mostly just to have fun and catch up on what is happening in our lives and families. Truthfully, we want to continue to raise funds for the school.
I know of no better way to do so than getting out in the fresh air, acting like you can, or really do, play the game of golf, rekindling relationships from previous years, and establishing relationships with new friends.
