For the Love of Reading

IMG_2073We’ve done it again!  Our participants in the annual Ontario Library Association’s Forest of Reading, Red Maple Award program for grades 7 & 8 have voted for their favourite title!

The all Ontario fiction award winner for 2014 is Susin Nielsen, author of The Reluctant Journal of Henry K. Larsen.

Our students voted Loki’s Wolves: The Blackwell Pages  by K.L. Armstrong and M.A. Marr as their winner, placing The Reluctant Journal as the runner up.  Both titles were read and enjoyed by many!

Every grade 7 and 8 student participates in the reading program. The Red Maple Jeopardy games are held during English class every month from January (when the program is launched) through to April (when the winner is chosen).

The exciting Jeopardy games have students compete for their team by answering school and book related questions.  These lively games encourages  the theme of “read at least one book” and also build interest in all the titles.

Students who read 5 to 10 titles can place a vote for their favorite title; students who read at least 3 titles are invited to an end-of-the-program party and those who read at least one title, can get points for their team during the Jeopardy games .

This popular program is designed to cultivate a love of reading and to introduce students to some new Canadian authors who write specifically for them.
