Rockway has announced its Senior drama for 2015-16:

“Frankenstein:1930 – Disturbed Genius

Some of you may be wondering why Rockway has chosen this play.
In fact, I hope over the coming months to help make that clear, using articles like this one, combined with student interviews, to explore the deeper meaning behind the script.

Every year, choosing the senior play is a process, which begins with reading many scripts, then a great deal of discussion at a variety of levels.

When we were considering the play last year, we noticed that people had very different reactions to the script. As we discussed the reasons behind these responses, the idea of adding a subtitle emerged. There are any number of subtitles we might have chosen, but we went with “Disturbed Genius”. The definition of disturbed is: emotionally or mentally unstable or abnormal, the definition of genius is: a person having exceptional intellectual or creative power. The subtitle resonates with one of the primary questions that the play raises, “What happens when a man takes matters into his hands, and begins to play God?”.

In choosing “Frankenstein” this year, we embark on unexplored territory for Rockway. But I think the rewards will far outweigh the risks. I hope you will join with me on the journey, whether as a parent of a cast or crew member, or as an audience member who comes to see a very powerful piece of theatre.

The performance dates for the production are February 10 – 12, 2016.

Keep watching the website for future articles and student interviews about the show.
