Social Media: the Good, the Bad, and the Beautiful

Posted on: October 12th, 2016

balzerRockway Mennonite Collegiate welcomed David Balzer, Assistant Professor of Communications and Media at Canadian Mennonite University, to campus September 27 – 29th for Spiritual Emphasis Week. In his first chapel address, Selfies just might be God’s idea, Balzer explored what it means to be created in the image of God in a digital age. He posed the question, “Could it be that our fascination with selfies may actually have gotten its start when God created the world?”

The second chapel address, Remember, you are smarter than your smartphone, Balzer acknowledged that it is no surprise that social media is attractive, and that we love it because we love connecting with people. He challenged us, however, that not everything about social media is life-giving and that attraction can turn into distraction, and posts can turn into pain. He encouraged us to embrace the moments of awkward face-to face interactions and to be wise when communicating through social media platforms!

viralThe final chapel address, What if virtue went viral? included the challenge to “adapt” rather than “adopt” what social media has to offer. He talked about having the privilege to become producers instead of carefree consumers. He encouraged us to use social media in ways that emulate kindness and social change. “Exercise a creative calling,” he said, “and give to others!” He left us with this final question, “What kind of beautiful are you going to make?” Following the final chapel, students were invited to share their thoughts and opinions at an open microphone. The questions asked were thoughtful and full of inquiry!

sewIn addition to his three addresses, Mr. Balzer visited numerous classes and facilitated many conversations about communication.  As well, he facilitated a fruitful discussion with parents, youth pastors and faculty on Wednesday, September 28th at 7 p.m. about the joys and challenges teenagers face about social media. #ihaveteenagers #livingthequestion  We are grateful to the Mennonite Church Eastern Canada, who sponsored this evening session!

Thank you, David, for sharing your passion, creativity and challenge with the Rockway community!
