Spiritual Emphasis Week 2021: Resilience

Posted on: February 18th, 2021

What is Spiritual Emphasis Week?

We share parents’ concern for students’ health and well-being. We also appreciate that students and families benefit from opportunities to explore important conversations, particularly ones that relate to students’ spirituality and making healthy choices. This is what inspires Rockway’s annual Spiritual Emphasis Week – a week where students are challenged to dig more deeply into a relevant topic, through a guest chapel speaker, discussions, and reflection. This year, the conversation continues with our focus on resilience.

RESILIENCE: BENDING, NOT BREAKING IN THE STORM

Our guest speaker is alumna Susan Schwartzentruber (Class of 1989). Susan will be speaking to students virtually through three video chapel addresses:

  • Tuesday, February 23, 2021: Peter and a Donkey
  • Wednesday, February 24, 2021: Fight/Flight/Freeze: it’s normal
  • Thursday, February 25, 2021: We need to be a forest of trees

Unlike other years, we will not be having an evening session for parents, but we do invite you to watch the videos at home – either with your child while their classes watch, or at another convenient time. They can be found in the Chapel book on myRockway.

As an Alumna of Rockway, Susan has fantastic memories of school plays, choir tours, volleyball tournaments, trips to Temagami, and forming great relationships that are still close friendships today. Susan is a social worker and has worked for Family and Children’s Services in Guelph for 14 years. Since 2010, she has worked as Clinical Director and Counsellor at Shalom Counselling Services. To build resilience and find balance, Susan sings with Da Capo Chamber Choir and loves spending time with family and friends. She currently lives in Waterloo with her family.

We look forward to Susan sharing her reflections with our student body and we are grateful for the support of Mennonite Church Eastern Canada, our Opening Chapel Sponsor.
