Taizé at Rockway

IMG_5838This past Tuesday morning our student body gathered for a contemplative worship experience in the style of the ecumenical community of Taizé in France.

Twenty students were involved in leading the service, including reading scripture or playing instruments. Our singing was accompanied by violins, cellos, flutes, guitars, and an oboe.

The tone of the service was set by a beautiful candle-lit altar. Taizé songs are very simple and are based on one or two lines of scripture usually from Psalms. These short songs are sung repetitively which gives them a meditative character.

Prayer and silence are at the heart of the Taizé experience. What a privilege it is for students, faculty and staff to sing in harmony with each other, and then to experience silence together, as part of worship!

A special thank you to Music Department Head Marlys Neufeldt, Jen Hoffman-Bailey and Music Council for their vision and planning.
