On a sunny Wednesday afternoon, five different classes had a chance to leave a legacy on Rockway school property by planting trees.

Moritz Sanio from the Grand River Conservation Authority and co-ordinator of the “Trees For Guelph” program came to lead the work and supply the diverse plant stock.

Every spring Moritz is responsible to engage community and school groups to plant thousands of native trees and shrubs with in the Grand River Watershed. He does this work with great enthusiasm and we are so lucky for his willingness to come share his vast plant and ecological knowledge with us.

For the past four years Moritz has been coming to Rockway to lead planting sessions, helping us to convert some of our mowed grassy areas into wildlife-friendly native woodlot. Next time you’re in the Rockway parking lot, take a look over the back hill and check out the newly growing forest. No longer will our maintenance staff need to mow that steep slope!
