Rockway’s Silo became international territory for a week in November as the ESL D class finished their United Nations unit with a UN simulation.  Each student represented a different member of the current Security Council, bringing forward a resolution for the other countries to vote on.

Students further developed their research and writing skills in preparing their projects, and practiced speaking skills in delivering their speeches and taking part in the open discussion preceding each vote.

Of course the “Permanent Five” countries wielded significant power, occasionally using their veto to stop resolutions which other countries were trying to pass, but a number of resolutions were successful.

South Korea and Australia got habitat and animal protection programs passed; France promoted gender equality education to be taught in all schools; China improved nuclear power safety regulations; and Argentina brought countries to work more closely together in delivering humanitarian aid.
