Wild Hope, 2015, Acrylic on Canvas, 60″ x 60″ designed by Claudia Isaac

A compelling work of original art bringing this year’s chapel theme to life was unveiled on January 27. Claudia Isaac, the grade 12 artist, chose to depict our theme “Wild Hope” with a uniquely crafted image of a tiger – although there’s more to this image than initially meets to eye.

IMG_0816Isaac writes, “This work is emblematic of the theme Wild Hope. Brave and fearless creatures, the tiger epitomizes both strength and freedom. Every tiger is unique because of their intricate striping, much like the uniqueness of the Rockway community. This tiger however is not made up of stripes, rather people. Each figure plays a crucial part in contributing to the overall image. This idea stresses the necessity of community and cooperation. The warm colours evoke a sense of passion and optimism. As a whole, this work provokes a wild hope: hope for ourselves, hope for others, and hope for the greater world.”

IMG_0798In her introduction of the piece, principal Ann Schultz shared that it was once a Rockway tradition to challenge students to create a visual representation of our chapel theme. She was pleased to be able bring back this initiative. “I saw the value in having something aesthetic in this chapel space, it will serve as an enhancement to our worship experience.”

Grade twelve art students were asked to submit proposals for the piece. Art teacher Karen Scott Booth alongside our faith and worship team selected Isaac’s proposal as the winner. The other finalists Mackenzie Rae and Bethany Snyder assisted Claudia in bringing her concept to life and Claudia spoke about the work in chapel.
